Branding Your Business with Favicons
So what the heck are favicons you may ask?
Well, if you take a look at the tab for this page or in the address bar, you will see that little (16×16 to be exact) green circle with a “W” in the middle. That’s my prized favicon. However, depending on certain browsers, you may not see it. From what I understand, this little favicon guy is hardly reliable across all browsers. But we do the best we can, right?
So here’s the official word from Wikipedia:
“A favicon (short for favorites icon), also known as a website icon, or shortcut icon, is an icon associated with a particular website or webpage. A web designer can create such icons in several ways and many recent web browsers can then make use of them. Browsers that support them may display them in the browser’s URL bar, next to the site’s name in lists of bookmarks, and next to the page’s title in a tabbed document interface.”
In other words, favicons are a useful tool for branding your business. Just as you wouldn’t forget to put your logo on your business card, favicons help you create that professional clean look for your website. It’s the “cherry on top” so to speak. Because as a business owner, you understand that how well your customers or prospects view your business’s overall appearance, can make all the difference in the world.
Ready to build your own? I found this great tool from DynamicDrive called the FavIcon Generator. From this website, you can create a favicon from any gif, jpg, png, and bmp under 150kB. Click on the link below to check it out! I found it very easy to use.
